Starlink threatens to shun Australia over auction plan
April 22, 2026
Starlink has threatened to shun Australia's satellite mobile market if it is forced into a spectrum auction. In what appears to be a warning to policymakers everywhere, David Goldman, SpaceX vice president for satellite policy, said any sale of spectrum would mean "Australians will have to bear the burden of higher cost or worse: no service." Goldman told an Australian senate hearing that regulator ACMA seemed to be moving "to sell the very spectrum we need to deliver the next-generation satellite service." He described it as "an unprecedented move that would contradict how it treats all other satellite spectrum, and a move that no other spectrum has taken to date."
