FCC Changes Broadband Labels
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved a Report and Order on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, changing some key elements of broadband consumer labels. The broadband consumer labels were mandated by the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), requiring all internet service providers (ISPs) to adopt and display the labels by October 10, 2024. The labels were designed to provide consumers with clear, accessible, and accurate information about broadband services so that consumers can compare plans to make informed choices that fit their needs and budgets. In December, 2025, the FCC issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) proposing changes to the existing broadband labels and seeking public comment on the proposed changes. The NPRM proposed eliminating some of the label’s requirements to reduce the expenses that ISPs incur in displaying the labels. They also requested comments on streamlining and eliminating other label requirements, such as the multilingual display requirement. While the FCC retained some of the labels’ useful elements, in sum, the adopted updated rules will weaken the labels’ ability to provide clear and concise information for consumers.
