On the verge of a digital divide in the use of generative AI?
The launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 has generalized the availability of chatbots with generative artificial intelligence capabilities for end users. From here, the question is whether this technology is being used equally by all user groups or rather whether we may be at the beginning of a new digital divide. The present study addresses this question by using a well-designed, nationwide survey with data on AI chatbot use. Binary and ordered logit regression models are estimated for the actual AI chatbot use. The results show that the older, the less educated, and women lag behind in the use of this new technology. In addition, users who make greater use of other digital technologies are also more likely to use generative AI. Although generative AI is a new technology, its pattern of use among individuals seems to follow the path of previous digital divides.
