A Federalist Papers for the AI future
If AI is as transformative an economic force as its greatest advocates (and detractors) believe it might be, then humans might need a new kind of economic policy to deal with it. Federal AI policy mostly involves incentivizing data center construction and keeping Washington out of the way. Even for many advocates, that misses a very large aspect of its potential impact. One widely held vision of the AI future would bring incredible economic prosperity to a world with many fewer jobs, which poses immense challenges for politics and power in any democratic society. What would a new economic master plan look like for an AI-transformed world? How do we bring about a harmonious utopia, rather than a volatile dystopia? That was the question behind the most recent edition of The Digitalist Papers, a series of essays curated by Stanford University, which is meant to be a next-gen rendition of The Federalist Papers for the AI era.
