Most Americans see freedom of the press – protected by the First Amendment to the U.S.

Americans today describe a complicated relationship with the news.

A growing share of Americans are using artificial intelligence chatbots like ChatGPT. But chatbots have not become a regular source of news for most Americans. About one-in-ten U.S. adults say they get news often (2 percent) or sometimes (7 percent) from AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini. An additional 16 percent do so rarely, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey. Most Americans (75 percent) say they never get news this way.

This study was commissioned by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism to understand how news is being consumed in a range of countries. Research was conducted by YouGov using an online questionnaire at the end of January/beginning of February 2022. 2021’s report contained some positive signs for the news industry, with higher consumption and rising trust amidst a second wave of Coronavirus lockdowns.
