Location: Remote (U.S.-based)
Employment Type: Full-time
The Benton Institute for Broadband & Society is seeking an exceptional editor and communications professional to help turn complex ideas about communications and technology policy, broadband, digital equity, and the public interest into clear, compelling, and accessible publications.
At its core, this position is for a writer and editor. The successful candidate does not need to be a subject matter expert in telecommunications and broadband policy, but should be an excellent editor: someone who can quickly understand complicated subjects, identify what matters, sharpen an argument, impose structure where needed, preserve an author's voice and arguments, and make writing clearer and more engaging. The position will also help manage Benton’s publishing and communications operation, shepherding reports from draft through copyediting, design, and publication; maintaining our website and social media; and producing webinars and selected events. The common thread is editorial judgment: understanding what Benton and its experts are trying to say, helping them say it clearly, who our audience is, and making sure the finished work is polished, published, and reaches the people who should see it.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with Benton’s Executive Editor on the development, editing, and publication of Benton content to maintain consistent editorial standards, quality, and style across our publications.
- Edit Benton’s daily newsletter, regular articles, commentaries, and other publications, helping ensure they are accurate, readable, and consistent with Benton’s editorial voice.
- Maintain brand guidelines and digital assets for publications and social media; identify needs and manage processes to update guidelines and assets as needed.
- Manage the production process for reports from manuscript through final publication.
- Oversee workflows with copyeditors, designers, and other outside vendors.
- Maintain and update content on Benton’s Drupal-based website and help ensure that publications and other materials are presented clearly and consistently.
- Manage Benton’s social media presence, maintaining an editorial calendar tied to Benton’s publications, organizational priorities, policy cycles, and current events, and producing clear, engaging content for broader audiences.
- Track the performance of Benton’s digital communications and use that information to improve how and where we reach audiences. Produce Benton webinars, working with the Benton team and speakers on programming, preparation, promotion, and execution. Support occasional in-person events, including developing event materials, coordinating speakers, managing communications, and helping turn event discussions into subsequent editorial content.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone who can learn quickly, ask good questions, recognize a strong argument, and help subject-matter experts communicate their ideas clearly. We are particularly interested in candidates who bring:
- Excellent writing skills and an ability to make complicated subjects understandable without oversimplifying them.
- Exceptional editing skills and a demonstrated ability to improve writing including experience editing the written work of academics, policymakers, and technical experts.
- Strong project-management skills and experience coordinating the editorial process, moving publications or comparable products from draft through final production.
- Experience with digital publishing and content-management systems. Experience with Drupal is helpful but not required.
- Experience managing organizational social media accounts and adapting substantive material for different platforms.
- The ability to manage multiple deadlines and work collaboratively with authors, designers, copyeditors, and colleagues, particularly in a remote setting.
- Knowledge of, and/or interest in, broadband-related issues, including industry and policy trends, and players is a plus.
- Intellectual curiosity and an interest in communications policy, broadband, technology, and the ways communications networks affect people and communities.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should submit a resume and brief cover letter outlining their qualifications and interest in the position to info@benton.org by November 8th. Please include “Editor and Communications Manager” in the subject line. Benton is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
