Senators Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Mark Warner (D-VA) will introduce the AI-Related Job Impacts Clarity Act. This legislation would require major companies and federal agencies to report AI related layoffs to the Department of Labor to be compiled into a publicly available report. California’s tech companies, the epicenter of the state’s economy, sent politicians a loud message: Back down from restrictive artificial intelligence regulation or they’ll leave. The tactic appeared to have worked, activists said, because some politicians weakened or scrapped guardrails to mitigate AI’s biggest risks. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) rejected a bill aimed at making companion chatbots safer for children after the tech industry fought it.
When Chinese President Xi Jinping visited South Korea, the centerpiece of his trip wasn’t some multibillion-dollar “Art of the Deal” transaction he’d brokered. Rather, it was his proposal to establish a global organization to set AI standards. In the vacuum left by President Donald Trump—who flew home from South Korea before the conference officially started—Xi pitched a Shanghai-based group that would set rules for international AI governance. This would allow China—rather than America or Europe—to mold how the world approaches AI. These aren’t just idle prospects.
Virginia’s next governor, Abigail Spanberger, says broadband expansion will be at the heart of her administration’s infrastructure priorities. A three-term member of Congress and former CIA case officer, Spanberger said her experience in Washington showed that many Virginians still lack dependable high-speed internet.
National Telecommunications and Information Administration Assistant Secretary Arielle Roth recently made a speech at the Hudson Institute that outlined her policy positions related to reshaping the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment program. The changes to BEAD were initiated by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and are now being finalized and implemented by Assistant Secretary Roth.
