Gov Newsom signs AI transparency bill prioritizing safety

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) signed a bill that will create new transparency measures for large AI companies, including public disclosure of security protocols and reports of critical safety incidents. Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) said Senate Bill 53 will create “commonsense guardrails” to ensure groundbreaking innovations don’t sacrifice safety and transparency amid the rapid growth of AI technologies.

Without federal dollars, ISPs may have to foot bill for digital literacy programs

In 2024, the FBI reported that annual rates of elder fraud increased 14% from 2022 to 2023. Tech support scams and personal data breaches were the top causes, of which there were over 25,000 complaints. These scams culminated in $3.4 billion in losses, averaging about $30,000 per victim. The Digital Equity Act—part of 2021's larger Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act—helped fund education programs to prevent fraud.

Level Up: Cable Providers Are Improving Uplink Speeds

Cable is in a pitched battle for broadband subscribers in the US. It has been losing. On one side of cable, fixed wireless access from mobile providers, with its “good enough” value proposition, has captured the bulk of broadband customers growth the past three years. On cable’s other flank, fiber-to-the-home outperforms cable, according to Ookla’s Speedtest® Connectivity Report for the United States in H1 2025, and fiber providers are holding their ground on subscribers.
