Fifty percent of U.S. adults say they prefer getting news from TV, 36 percent prefer getting news online and 10 percent prefer print, a survey indicates.
The survey of 2,307 adults conducted by Harris Interactive Aug. 13 to 20 found more than two-thirds of Americans display a moderate interest in the news, indicating that keeping up with the news is one of many ways they like to spend their leisure time. Thirteen percent self-described themselves as "news junkies," while 18 percent said they were not really interested in the news. There are more male news junkies than female -- 17 percent of men said they follow the news closely, compared with 9 percent of women. Younger adults are especially likely to express a lack of interest in following the news -- 31 percent of the echo boomers, or the generation following the baby boom, said they lacked interest in the news; followed by 23 percent of gen X, or those born 1964 to 1982; 10 percent of baby boomers, or those born from 1946 to 1964 and 6 percent of matures, or those age 65. Online is the dominant mode among echo boomers, while TV remains the dominant mode for gen Xers and the older groups.

Google's unilateral change to its privacy policy in March will come under fire from European data protection commissioners within days, sources say.
The controversial changes, in which Google tied together the previously separate data collected under services including its search engine, YouTube and Google+ were announced in January and implemented two months later. While creating a unified privacy policy across all the services, it also in effect amassed the data into a single location. That attracted widespread criticism – and now the group of 30 data protection commissioners from across the European Union are believed to have determined that Google has breached EU privacy laws. Now Google might be required to undo the changes – although Auke Haagsma, a lawyer advising the lobby group Icomp, which is critical of Google's policies, said that would be like trying to "unscramble the egg."

According to a survey of 56 corporate and governmental organizations conducted by the Ponemon Institute, the average amount they paid for all the costs associated with cyber attacks was $8.9 million during the past year. That's up 6 percent from the previous year's study.
And for the first time, Ponemon expanded the survey to other countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia and Japan. Costs ascribed to cyber attacks in those locales was significantly lower: $5.9 million in Germany and $5.1 million in Japan, for example. The study, sponsored by HP Enterprise Security, offers some explanation for why the U.S. cyber crime figure is far higher. "We found that U.S. companies were much more likely to experience the most expensive types of cyber attacks, which are malicious insiders, malicious code, and Web-based incidents," the report says.
Cyberattacks cost U.S. businesses an average $8.9 million annually, study says
According to a July 2012 McKinsey Global Institute report on "the social economy," the average knowledge worker now spends 28% of her work time managing email. If you work 50 hours per week, that's 14 hours stuck in the inbox. McKinsey's report suggested that workers could improve their email productivity by 25-30% through better use of social collaboration platforms, buying back 7-8.5% of their workweek.
But even if your company isn't investing in such platforms, here's some low-hanging fruit for getting your head out of your inbox for a few of those 14 hours:
- Unsubscribe: Play offense with your inbox by getting yourself off any lists you don't read, and unsubscribing to commercial messages.
- Don't use folders: You can create one "archive" folder if you like to keep your inbox empty, but use the search function to find any information you need.
- Send email at the right time: According to Baydin's analysis, the average email user writes 40 messages a day, but there's no point writing these emails if they don't get read.
- Don't check email so often: Try checking just once an hour, doing 40 minutes of focused work, then 20 minutes of inbox management. Chances are, you'll get a lot more done.

Europe’s competition watchdog is ready to approve plans to pump £530 million of UK state aid into rural broadband, a move which would clear the way for long-delayed work to widen access to superfast internet connections.
Joaquín Almunia, the European competition commissioner, has indicated he is happy for state funds to be used to support the initiative if some relatively minor changes are made to the design of the scheme. It marks a critical turning point in the difficult approval talks with Brussels and would be a second breakthrough for the government’s digital economy ambitions after a deal with mobile operators last week to accelerate the rollout of 4G mobile services. The Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) scheme – which will roll out superfast internet access to most of the UK – has been delayed as the commission investigated whether it infringed rules on illegal state aid. The decision still needs to be rubber stamped by other commissioners, which is likely to delay any announcement until later this month, although those close to the talks said this is seen as a formality.

Prime Minister David Cameron must have felt kind of cool, if a little late, when he joined Twitter on Oct 6.
“I promise there won’t be ‘too many tweets ...’ ” he wrote in his first message, as if quoting someone. Give him points for effort. But Cameron, who had already attracted more than 80,000 followers by Sunday afternoon, clearly had not reckoned with the sharp, anarchic sense of humor that Twitter can unleash, particularly among the annoyed and the restive. Angry at the government’s economic philosophy, at an austerity budget filled with measures cutting jobs and services, at the reorganization of the National Health Service, at recent suggestions by Jeremy Hunt, the health secretary, that he would like to limit abortion rights, the Twitter-using public unleashed a torrent of witty, mean remarks. Some teased Cameron’s privileged background and rich friends. Others attacked his policies. Others were just funny.

If the British Columbia, Canada lawsuit against Google for its data mining of G-mail is successful, it has the potential to make anti-spam and anti-virus software that scans emails illegal.
Similar cases have been launched in the United States, where Eric Goldman, a professor at Santa Clara University School of Law and director of the High Tech Law Institute, has characterized them as “are-you-kidding-me” lawsuits. “If electronic scrutiny of private email constitutes an interception then all anti-spam software violates that as well … the same probably with virus checkers,” Goldman said when asked about the lawsuit filed Thursday in BC Supreme Court. A Sunshine Coast man is seeking damages of $500 per email and an injunction that would stop Google from intercepting and using personal information it collects by scanning e-mails sent through Gmail. The statement of claim alleges that Google is violating the Privacy Act, infringing copyright and breaching the Competition Act.
G-mail lawsuit an ‘are-you-kidding-me’ type case, says U.S. academic
Government support plays a vital role in incubating new ideas that are harvested by the private sector, sometimes many years later, creating companies and jobs.
A report published this year by the National Research Council, a government advisory group, looked at eight computing technologies, including digital communications, databases, computer architectures and artificial intelligence, tracing government-financed research to commercialization. It calculated the portion of revenue at 30 well-known corporations that could be traced back to the seed research backed by government agencies. The total was nearly $500 billion a year. The long-term importance of government-supported research may loom small in the current debate over how to reduce the federal deficit. But it is an economic issue worth keeping in mind, and one that points to the kinds of tough choices and trade-offs facing policy makers.

Chinese telecom companies are bracing for a new congressional report that is likely to accuse them of posing a security threat to the United States. On October 8, the House Intelligence Committee will release the findings of its yearlong investigation into the Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE. The chairman of the panel, Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI), hinted last week that the report wouldn’t be favorable to the telecom giants. "The report will explain why there may be reasons for concern," Chairman Rogers said at an event in Washington. Some officials worry that the Chinese government could use the companies to spy on Americans or sabotage communications networks.

Yes, especially when you examine the technological advancements in the pipeline and put your faith in the brain trust working on future enhancements. This challenge will test a few limits of technology (literally — think Shannon’s limit) along with our belief that the human mind can use innovation to overcome big challenges. What’s needed? You start by improving existing networks—continuing to evolve 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi. But a challenge of this magnitude needs more resources and, more importantly, radically new ways of acquiring, deploying, managing and optimizing these resources.
