What AI does to truth
The 2017 “alternative facts” statement made by the White House was a turning point. We are now in a place where the person who gets their version of the truth out fastest and biggest wins. The fact that President Trump has a social network he calls “Truth Social” is not an accident. He wants to own the word “truth.” We’re past the point where there’s a singular truth or a singular fact. That being said, we have the right to say to people delivering information to us: “What’s the underlying source of that?” I think you’re going to see consumers begin to choose sources based on them being more transparent about how they use AI, about how they use facts—in the same way that when there’s a label on a product that says what a food is made out of, you expect that to not be fiction. For consumers, either you demand transparency in truth, or you end up being the victim of misinformation.
