Maine Launches Study to Assess Gaps in Cell Coverage Statewide

The Maine Connectivity Authority (MCA) is leading a statewide planning process to assess cellular connectivity across Maine. Through the Cellular & Wireless Action Plan, communities throughout the state are working together to ensure that local input shapes the future of mobile service. Many areas across the State experience frustrating gaps in coverage and reliability due to Maine’s remote terrain and the high cost of expanding wireless networks to meet the growing needs of Maine communities. The Cellular & Wireless Action Plan aims to identify solutions by combining technical analysis with real-world input from residents and business owners to inform critical investments that improve cellular and mobile connectivity and reliability in Maine. In addition to its focus on broadband connectivity, MCA is also charged with ensuring reliable cellular coverage as part of the agency's comprehensive connectivity strategy. MCA has launched this planning effort in collaboration with technical experts and strategic engagement partners, and stakeholders across the state. Together, they are conducting technical assessments of coverage gaps while gathering crucial community input to understand how cellular service, or lack thereof, impacts real lives. The state’s work will identify priority areas for infrastructure improvements, inform policy recommendations, and guide strategic investments in cellular infrastructure across the state. With community input from surveys, technical mapping data, and local partnerships, the plan will provide a comprehensive roadmap for strengthening Maine's cellular network. A statewide survey will be the cornerstone of the planning process, capturing the lived experiences that raw data alone cannot reveal. Maine residents, business owners, seasonal visitors, and anyone who spends time in our communities are urged to participate in MCA's statewide survey at maineconnectivity.org/cellular-plan by December 8. Input gathered will inform an Interim Demand Report, available for public feedback in early 2026, with community comments incorporated into the final Cellular & Wireless Action Plan for release in 2026.
