Now that the Federal Communications Commission is freeing up spectrum once again, we have an opportunity to build on that momentum and deliver the 800-megahertz pipeline Congress envisioned—and in a timely way. Doing so is critical to ensuring that AI innovation stays where it belongs: here in the United States. The pressure on timing is real.
- AI Data Capacity: AI traffic is already growing three times faster than traditional wireless data. By 2031, we expect four times more wireless traffic overall. According to Accenture, without more spectrum, wireless could become a bottleneck to AI innovation, with over a third of AI needs going unmet. Meeting this new capacity demand requires timely mid-band spectrum auctions.
- AI-Native 6G: AI-native 6G networks will be ready to deploy by 2030, and the entrepreneurs, developers, and innovators who build on them will need large, contiguous blocks of spectrum. 6G isn’t just a faster version of 5G. It’s built with AI to dynamically allocate spectrum, anticipate congestion, and even sense the physical environment. The network itself will become intelligent. In turn, 6G will empower future AI development through key new capabilities. The countries that have spectrum ready for 6G deployment in 2030 will enjoy a distinct advantage in attracting innovation, investment, and talent.
These trends make clear that we have limited time to deliver the connectivity and infrastructure needed to meet the AI moment. That is why this Administration’s spectrum efforts are so critical and why hitting the accelerator on delivering the 800-megahertz pipeline matters right now.
