The Supreme Court agreed to decide whether the Federal Communications Commission’s authority to issue massive fines violated AT&T’s and Verizon’s constitutional right to a jury trial. It’s the latest Supreme Court case to take aim at federal agencies’ regulatory power. The case is expected to be argued near the end of this term, which would enable it to be decided by summer 2026. The FCC ordered AT&T to pay roughly $57 million. Verizon’s fine amounted to nearly $47 million.

OpenAI and Common Sense Media said they would set aside competing proposals in California to limit how artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots interact with children and work together on a compromise. The deal could avert a multimillion-dollar fight between OpenAI and Common Sense Media, which both said they would work to qualify their measures for the California ballot in November 2026. OpenAI will commit at least $10 million to the ballot measure campaign.
An artificial intelligence (AI) large language model’s (LLM) parameters are often said to be the dials and levers that control how it behaves. Think of a planet-size pinball machine that sends its balls pinging from one end to the other via billions of paddles and bumpers set just so. Tweak those settings and the balls will behave in a different way. OpenAI’s GPT-3, released in 2020, had 175 billion parameters. Google DeepMind’s latest LLM, Gemini 3, may have at least a trillion—some think it’s probably more like 7 trillion—but the company isn’t saying.

Congress is currently considering legislation which would require operators of smartphone app stores (namely Apple for iOS and Google with Android) to verify the age of all users as a pre-condition of using any individual app. In other words, rather than have each alleged problematic app be responsible for verifying the age of their respective customers, this legislation would have the federal government shift the burden—and, by extension, the assumption of full liability for the actions of third parties over which they have no control—onto app stores.
Iran's internet shutdown represents a “new high-water mark” in terms of its sophistication and severity—and could last a long time. As the blackout kicked in, 90 percent of internet traffic to Iran evaporated. International calls to the country appeared blocked, and domestic mobile phones had no service, said Amir Rashidi, an Iranian digital rights expert. This is far from the first time a country has blocked the internet for political reasons.
