NTIA Administrator Roth Joins Sen Capito in West Virginia to Highlight Progress in Broadband Expansion

National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) Administrator Arielle Roth joined Sen Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), local stakeholders, and industry leaders for a roundtable discussion addressing current connectivity challenges in West Virginia and ongoing efforts to close broadband internet infrastructure gaps across the state. During the roundtable, Administrator Roth provided updates on NTIA's progress in expediting broadband deployment through the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program.

How big is the need for speed in the broadband market?

As competition of all kinds of technologies ramps in the broadband market, policy experts debated about how much speed should matter as a metric for quality service. Foermer Federal Communications Commissioner Michael O'Reilly argued the industry is overselling the idea that the public needs “some certain minimum level,” like 1-gig. Consumers don’t really care that fiber providers are duking it out with cable, wireless and satellite – they just want the tech to work when they need it to work.

North Carolina Draft BEAD Program Final Proposal Available for Public Commentary

The North Carolina Department of Information Technology’s (NCDIT) Division of Broadband and Digital Opportunity released its draft Final Proposal for the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program and seeks public comment. The proposal includes over $400 million in recommended BEAD awards to internet service providers. If approved by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), these federally funded awards will expand high-speed internet access to 93,138 households, businesses and community anchor institutions across the state by 2030.

Comcast expands in rural Florida amid shifting broadband market

Comcast has extended its network to more than 32,000 homes and businesses across 16 rural counties in Florida. The expansion is funded through a public-private $322 million partnership with the state’s Broadband Opportunity Program and Capital Projects Fund, and brings gigabit-plus internet, mobile, entertainment, and home security services via Xfinity and Comcast Business to previously underserved communities.
