CPB Names Matthew White Executive Director of the American Archive

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has named Matthew White executive director of its American Archive initiative. He will provide strategic direction in guiding and implementing all aspects of the American Archive, which is public broadcasting's comprehensive archive of radio and television programming, ensuring its collection, management and preservation. White brings to CPB over twenty years of transitioning archival film and video archives to digital platforms. He has worked independently with global media groups in developing their assets for digital access and distribution and has worked extensively with the BBC, Smithsonian Networks, Apple and the National Film Board of Canada, among many others. Prior to that, White was the executive vice president of Digital Markets at the National Geographic Society, where he managed their audio-visual holdings to meet the immediate demands of their global production and distribution activities. He has also worked closely with public television stations across the country including WETA in Washington, DC and WNET and WLIW in New York.

New Lobbyist For ICANN

The group that manages the Internet's address system has hired a new Washington-based lobbyist. Jamie Hedlund will take over at the end of the month as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers' vice president for government affairs for the Americas, according to an ICANN insider. Hedlund has a broad background in telecom and technology policy issues. He is currently the vice president of regulatory affairs for the Consumer Electronics Association, where he has worked since late 2008. Prior to that, he served as director of public policy for Yahoo. Hedlund, who began his career as a staff attorney at the FCC, has much experience in the telecom field, having also worked for Level 3 Communications, Sprint and T-Mobile.

Hyperlocal sites becoming major M&A targets

While newspapers have been decimated by the economics transforming today's media industry, Web sites that report news and deliver other content at the neighborhood, or "hyperlocal," level, are bursting with life, with many of them becoming sought-after targets by big media and big tech companies. Meanwhile, hyperlocal startups continued to get funded. Hyperlocal was just one tech sector that fared well in 2009.

Governing in the Age of Fox News

The polarization of the American media has deep historical roots—the republic came into being amidst a vigorous partisan press. But the splintering of public attention and the intensification of ideological journalism—in particular, the rise of Fox News—have created unique challenges for President Obama. Is it possible to have partisan media that retain professional standards of reporting?

The Professor and the Prosecutor

The Cook County (IL) State's Attorney's Office provides at least two reporters a memo containing scurrilous and unsubstantiated claims about the conduct of the Northwestern University journalism professor and his students in an earlier case.
