According to the Center for Responsive Politics projections, candidates, parties, and advocacy groups will have spent $2.6 billion by the end of 2006 to try to get their respective candidates elected in 472 federal contests or building up the war chests of Senate incumbents who get to sit this one out. That's the most expensive midterm ever.

A federal judge on Tuesday permitted news organizations to conduct exit polls outside voting places, overturning part of a Florida law that put such polls in the same category as electioneering and other banned activities. The Associated Press and five television networks sued last month to block the law. They are fighting similar laws in Nevada and Ohio, saying that questioning voters as they leave polling places on Election Day is crucial to newsgathering.
