Pawel Popiel is an Assistant Professor at Washington State University’s Murrow College of Communication. His research examines the political economy and regulation of the communication and media industries, particularly digital platforms. Popiel’s work focuses on two interrelated themes: the political implications of policies governing information, communications, and digital technologies, and the political processes underlying the formulation and enforcement of those policies. His research has been published in journals like Information, Communication & Society, Policy & Internet, Critical Studies in Media Communication, Journal of Digital Media & Policy, and others, and has been presented at major conferences. Popiel obtained his Ph.D. at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania, and holds a B.A. in Political Science from McGill University and an M.A. in Media Studies from the University of Texas at Austin.

David Eliot Berman is an Assistant Professor at Seton Hall University.He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Media, Inequality and Change Center at the University of Pennsylvania. His upcoming book—The Optimizers: How Silicon Valley Reprogrammed Journalism—investigates how social media algorithms have transformed journalistic labor. He is also the co-author (with Victor Pickard) of the book After Net Neutrality: A New Deal for the Digital Age, which was published by Yale University Press in 2019.
