But not everyone in the wireless industry is seeing the same picture.

The Federal Communications Commission seeks information and data for the Commission’s analysis of fixed broadband competition as required by RAY BAUM’S Act of 2018. This Public Notice requests comment on the criteria or metrics that should be used to evaluate the state of fixed broadband competition. Comment and information also is sought on industry data, competitive dynamics, and trending factors in the industry, including but not limited to, subscribership numbers, financial indicators (such as revenues or profitability), investment, pricing, and network coverage.

Comcast recently installed Wi-Fi equipment in public rights of way without permits in the city of Corvallis (OR). But instead of settling the matter locally, NCTA—The Internet & Television Association, the cable industry's chief lobby group, told the Federal Communications Commission that it should override municipal permitting processes such as the one in Corvallis. In doing so, the cable lobby group made "misleading and inaccurate" allegations about what actually happened in the Comcast/Corvallis dispute, according to city officials.

As predicted 10 years ago, in the absence of anti-redlining provisions, carriers have not invested in upgrading their broadband capacity in communities of color at anything close to the same rate they have upgraded in wealthier, whiter neighborhoods. As a result, the urban digital divide is once again growing. It’s not just that high-speed broadband is ridiculously expensive, although this is also a serious barrier to adoption in urban areas.

The Free State Foundation says the Federal Communications Commission got it right in its 2017 Wireless Competition Report when it concluded that the mobile wireless broadband market is competitive.

The European Union wants Google to stop tying together its search, browser and app store products for handset makers. The regulators would love it if Google simply let handset makers like Samsung ship Android phones loaded with their own browsers and app stores instead of Google’s. Yet the European Union is letting Google decide how it wants to comply with its ruling.
