A barrage of seemingly unrelated headlines suggest that Hollywood and Big Tech are on a collision course and that the next few years will reshape how the world spends its free time and which platforms will dominate. As tech and AI companies push further into entertainment and media, their stewardship of that content (or lack thereof) is becoming a story unto itself.

Ever since Donald Trump bumped Brendan Carr up to chair of the Federal Communications Commission in November 2024 (after naming him a commissioner during his first term), Chairman Carr has attacked the country’s media, entertainment and even tech giants with a cool fury, threatening their business and, critics say, attempting to bully them into more favorable coverage of the President. Historically concerned with the sundry matters of broadcast licenses and station fines, the FCC hardly would seem like the centerpiece of a major media-suppression effort.

Cable TV giant Charter Communications and Liberty Broadband Corp. have entered into a definitive agreement under which Charter has agreed to acquire Liberty Broadband, part of the empire of John Malone, in an all-stock transaction.
