Few areas of higher education have been as passionately debated as learning assessment in the age of AI. Since the debut and rapid adoption of readily available generative AI chatbots, educators have grappled with how learning assessment would be impacted. Educators have weighed in with opinions ranging from "AI will revolutionize higher education" to "AI will destroy higher education" and everything in between. To that end, EDUCAUSE presents this report on the impact of AI on learning assessment.

Generative artificial intelligence is having a profound impact on higher education. EDUCAUSE assembled a global panel of experts to envision their preferred future of GenAI in higher education and create an action plan to get to that future. Panelists focused on a 10-year time horizon, imagining how current trends, technologies, and practices might converge to result in a better future. From that vision, they identified actions to be taken by individuals, units and departments, cross-department collaborators, and cross-institution collaborators. Actions include:

With artificial intelligence (AI) technologies becoming increasingly prevalent in educational settings and beyond, it is crucial to examine how paid AI services will increase disparities in digital access and literacy. GenAI resources can be valuable educational tools, but their cost may exacerbate the digital divide between wealthy and low-income students. By offering free access to the paid version of their products to financially struggling students, AI companies can help level the playing field.
