What a difference two years makes. When we first tracked fixed broadband performance across all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia in 2024 using Ookla Speedtest Intelligence data, only 10 states provided the Federal Communications Commission’s minimum standard for broadband speeds (100 Mbps download/20 Mbps upload) via fiber, cable, or DSL to at least 60 percent of their Speedtest users. In the first half of 2026, 46 states and D.C. hit that 60 percent threshold, and just four states fell below the mark: Wisconsin, Wyoming, Montana, and Alaska. In addition,13 states can now deliver the minimum standard of broadband to 70 percent or more of Speedtest users.

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration applauded the release of the Office of Management and Budget Memorandum-26-19, which will drastically improve the process for repurposing federal spectrum for 6G—a key initiative for NTIA as it conducts an unprecedented number of band studies to relocate federal spectrum for commercial use. OMB Memo-26-19 rescinds guidance that prevented NTIA and the Federal Communications Commission from running in parallel the work needed to study, identify, and prepare federal spectrum for auction.

Since nobody I know will even be using a government spy satellite, you might wonder why I am writing about Starshield, the military-grade network operated by SpaceX. I’ve been wondering lately about Starlink’s claim that it is interested in providing backhaul to cell sites and bigger broadband connections to rural businesses. This has always puzzled me because, at the local network level, a satellite network is no different than any other network. If Starlink were to connect to a handful of cell sites in a given rural area, the bandwidth used for the cell sites would reduce the capacity available to residential customers. There is only so much bandwidth available in a localized satellite footprint. This makes me wonder if Starlink plans to have separate satellites just for backhaul.

Rep Michael McCaul (R-TX)—founder and co-chair of the Congressional Childhood Cancer Caucus—introduced the Ailani Myers Accelerating Innovation in Medicine to Cure Kids with Cancer Act with caucus co-chairs Reps Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA) and Mike Kelly (R-PA). The legislation, which is named after a brave young cancer patient and advocate, will accelerate the use of artificial intelligence to improve and transform pediatric cancer research, treatment options, and data storage.

Researchers at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI and the university’s RegLab recently published a study demonstrating how large language models can help identify discriminatory local laws. The AI system helped human reviewers identify thousands of local statutes that could violate anti-discrimination laws by treating people differently based on race, gender, and citizenship. HAI fellow Daniel E. Ho, who helped conduct the study, said AI is well-suited for the task because of the sheer scale of local laws. "In San Francisco alone," he said, "the municipal code and its associated resolutions run some 16 million words."

The Gates Foundation has pledged to spend at least $1 billion over the next two years to expand global access to artificial intelligence and use it to tackle social inequalities. The foundation’s annual Goalkeepers report advocated an urgent effort to ensure that A.I. “helps narrow gaps between the richest and poorest rather than widening them.” The funding will be used to support A.I. projects in health care, agriculture and education, and to develop data sets in more languages. “The window to influence who benefits, and how soon, is short,” the report argued. If A.I. keeps developing as it is, “the most capable tools will be built first for the people and institutions most able to pay for them,” according to the report, “not necessarily for those who could benefit most.” Most of the data used to train the early large language models was in English, according to the report, “leaving many communities that could benefit from A.I. poorly represented in the data on which these tools were built.” The foundation said that it would divide the new funding among external groups working on its priorities, spanning work like encouraging A.I. use among doctors, farmers and teachers, or developing data sets in more languages. Though significant, the funding is a small fraction of the hundreds of billions of dollars at the disposal of commercial A.I. firms.

Most Americans see freedom of the press – protected by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution – as important to society. But their support for press freedom is far from absolute, according to a new Pew Research Center study from the Pew-Knight Initiative. While Americans largely support press freedom in principle, half or more also say the government should be able to restrict news reporting in certain cases, particularly if it endangers national security or contains inaccurate information. In fact, when forced to choose between accuracy and press freedom, Americans are slightly more likely to choose the side of accuracy.
