Sun-Times Media closing 7 Pioneer Press Illinois weeklies

Sun-Times Media Holdings LLC will close seven Pioneer Press weekly newspapers in the northern and western suburbs, with final deliveries on Dec. 23.

The papers to be shuttered are the Grayslake Review, Gurnee Review, Proviso Herald, Antioch Review, Edison-Norwood Times Review, Doings-Elmhurst and Review for the Lake Villa and Lindenhurst communities. Collectively, they have about 12,000 subscribers. Chicago-based Sun-Times said it is eliminating the papers after a review of its overall coverage in the market, said Sun-Times CEO Jeremy Halbreich. The company also based its decision on advertising demand, he said. It’s not clear yet whether shuttering the papers will result in any job losses, he said. He said he doesn't expect additional closures in the near future.
