Incoming Tribune Publishing CEO and former magazine executive Jack Griffin has a history of finding new ways to make advertisers pay for content and he expects to do the same in his new job.

“My job is going to be to get in there and work with the teams on what they do best, which is delivering world-class journalism and content to readers and users on all platforms and figure out the best ways to monetize that and serve advertisers and build other businesses,” Griffin, the former CEO of Time Inc., said after the announcement of his appointment. He starts in the new Tribune post on April 14. He's taking the job as Tribune Company prepares to spin off the publishing group of eight major daily newspapers later this year and to focus on its more profitable broadcast division, made up of 39 local TV outlets across the U.S. The new broadcast company plans to keep for itself many of the more valuable assets, such as its real estate and certain online businesses, while saddling the new publishing company with additional costs and debt. Even so, Griffin said he's not vexed by that challenge.
