Some coverage of Friday's FCC meeting. FCC officials outlined a sweeping agenda for 2006, with priorities including high-speed Internet deployment, media ownership, digital television, homeland security, "enhanced 911" service, or E-911, for Internet telephony; improvements to the universal service program that funds telephone service in rural and low-income areas; and changes in inter-carrier compensation, the complex system of payments phone carriers make to each other to complete calls. Chairman Martin said implementation of a congressionally mandated "hard date" to end the transition from analog to digital television will be a key goal for 2006. FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein, a Democrat, said educating Americans about the "historic transition" is a major responsibility.
