Chicago Tribune buys 38 Chicago Sun-Times suburban papers

Tribune Publishing Co. is purchasing the Sun-Times suburban newspaper chain, cementing its dominance in the Chicago metro region and giving it new muscle with advertisers. The company announced it is buying six daily and 32 weekly Sun-Times Media papers from Chicago-based Wrapports LLC, adding a group that has a collective daily circulation of 72,000, with 87,000 on Sundays and 52,000 weekly. While the Chicago Tribune has long dominated the metro newspaper market against the No. 2 Chicago Sun-Times and its suburban chain, the additional papers will let the Chicago Tribune penetrate the suburbs to an extent that it never was able to achieve with its TribLocal suburban coverage.
