Consumer Electronics Association Chief Executive Officer Gary Shapiro began the Consumer Electronics Show with a paean to the virtues of information technology -- and a revised list of priorities to keep the industry strong. The priorities include: completing the transition to digital television, preserving consumers' "fair use" rights to copyrighted materials, "ensuring that Americans can install their technologies of choice in their cars," barring telecommunications and cable carries from discriminating against competitors' content in order to promote broadband competition and ensure network neutrality toward competitors' content, and e-cycling.
