There were drastic gains, and losses, in average time spent at the 30 top newspapers sites in June. The average time spent at NYTimes.com, for example, fell nearly by half in the month of June year-over-year, according to Nielsen Online. The site usually dominates the list of top 30 online newspapers in terms of average time spent, which is generally in the 30 minute-range for NYTimes.com. More people spent time at USA Today, the Chicago Tribune, Boston.com, and the Detroit Free Press to name a few sites that had a higher time spent average than NYTimes. It should be noted, however, that effective in June Nielsen expanded its panel eightfold allowing for the inclusion of thousands of more sites for measurement. This change could affect year-over-year comparisons, according to Nielsen.
