A.I. Is Starting to Wear Down Democracy

Since the explosion of generative artificial intelligence over the last two years, the technology has demeaned or defamed opponents and, for the first time, officials and experts said, begun to have an impact on election results. Free and easy to use, A.I. tools have generated a flood of fake photos and videos of candidates or supporters saying things they did not or appearing in places they were not—all spread with the relative impunity of anonymity online.

Limits on public broadband network ownership discussed at West Virginia statehouse

Should West Virginia place limits on local governments competing with private companies to create broadband networks? The Joint Standing Committee on the Judiciary recently received an overview of the concept of state versus local broadband preemption. While broadband issues are typically tackled by the Joint Standing Committee on Technology and Infrastructure, Joint Judiciary Committee Co-Chairman JB Akers (R-Kanawha) said the issue of broadband preemption was a legal matter.

Eligible Entities Should Press Forward with Broadband Adoption Efforts

On June 6, 2025, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration released its Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment Policy Notice which, among other things, froze funding for non-deployment efforts while the NTIA conducts a further review with plans to “issue updated guidance in the future.” NTIA went on to state that it will not reimburse Eligible Entities for “new costs associated with previously approved non-deployment activities incurred after the date of this Policy Notice.” By freezing non-deployment funding, the Policy Notice has created a challenge for Elligible En
