What GAO Learned About Federal Broadband Programs

This week, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a comprehensive review of federal broadband funding programs and what actions are needed from key agencies to help close the digital divide. In May 2022, GAO called for the synchronization of federal efforts on broadband, identifying 100 broadband programs and emphasizing the need for a national broadband strategy.

FCC Provides Guidance on the Transition to Reporting Fabric Location IDs in the High Cost Universal Broadband Portal

FCC Chairman Carr Announces May Open Meeting Agenda

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr announced that the items below are tentatively on the agenda for the May Open Commission Meeting scheduled for Thursday, May 22, 2025: 

Project Kuiper is Finally Here

After several delays due to bad weather, Amazon’s Project Kuiper finally launched its first batch of low-orbit broadband satellites on April 28. Amazon is under pressure to get the launches going and has a commitment to the Federal Communications Commission to launch 1,618 satellites by July 2026. That’s half of Project Kuiper’s first satellite fleet of 3,232 satellites. Project Kuiper’s stated mission is to provide fast, affordable broadband to communities around the world that are unserved or underserved with broadband.

Frontier Reports First-Quarter 2025 Results

Frontier Communications reported first-quarter 2025 results. Highlights include:

  • Added 321,000 fiber passings to reach 8.1 million total locations passed with fiber
  • Added 107,000 fiber broadband customers, resulting in fiber broadband customer growth of 19.3 percent year-over-year
  • Consumer fiber broadband average revenue per user of $68.21 increased 4.7 percent year-over-year
  • Revenue of $1.51 billion increased 3.4 percent year-over-year as growth in fiber-based products was partly offset by declines in copper-based products
