Public Knowledge Urges President, Senate To Swiftly Nominate Democratic Commissioner to FCC

The president and the Senate must both urgently work to nominate and confirm a Democratic Commissioner to replace Commissioner Starks and preserve the seat of Commissioner Gomez so the FCC maintains its historic and present bipartisanship. The failure of the president and Senate to do so would threaten the agency’s ability to strengthen our democratic media ecosystem and ensure that broadband is accessible and affordable to all communities without discrimination.

FCC Lays Groundwork to Identify Foreign Adversary Ownership in U.S. Communications Industry

The Federal Communications Commission voted to begin a process to formalize the identification of entities holding licenses and authorizations in the communications sector that are controlled by a foreign adversary both at present and on a rolling basis going forward. The U.S. Government has long recognized that foreign adversaries have been engaged in a widespread and coordinated effort to exploit, attack, and otherwise compromise the integrity of U.S. communications networks.

States, Don’t Give up on MDUs

A plea for states to not give up on the opportunity to use Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program non-deployment funds to bring better wired-broadband to affordable housing multi-dwelling units (MDUs). Landlords of affordable housing MDUs face a chicken-and-egg dilemma—many affordable housing MDUs don’t have good broadband because the tenants can’t afford to pay market rates for broadband. The affordable rates needed for success will vary according to the incomes of tenants.
