How C-Band Auction Revenues can Address the Digital Divide

Current law requires that spectrum auction proceeds are automatically deposited in the US Treasury, barring a few exceptions. Legislation would be required to direct C-Band auction proceeds to other causes, such as a transition fund or incentive payments to satellite operators. The Senate Commerce Committee approved a bill called the 5G Spectrum Act, which would direct at least 50% of C-Band auction proceeds to the Treasury and 10% to rural broadband.

Black Friday and Cyber Week sales highlight the need for faster broadband speeds

Black Friday and Cyber Week broadband shoppers showed a marked preference for faster broadband speeds. Along with the supposed screaming deals offered by retailers, both online and at brick and mortar locations, some internet service providers were also serving up discounts after Thanksgiving. IMA Research looked at more than 10,000 orders that were fulfilled by ISPs during that time frame and found that 35% of the consumers picked speeds of 100 Mbps or higher, indicating the need for speed for ultra-high definition TV and gaming.

USDA Invests $5.6 Million in Broadband for Rural West Virginia Communities

The Department of Agriculture has invested $5.6 million in two, high-speed broadband infrastructure projects that will create or improve rural e-Connectivity for more than 3,250 rural households and nearly 200 businesses in Tyler and Wetzel counties in West Virginia. 

E-Rate Funding Announcement

The Federal Communications Commission's Wireline Competition Bureau announces the E-Rate program category two budget multipliers and funding floor amounts for funding year 2020. In the recently adopted Category Two Report and Order, the FCC extended the test period for the category two budget approach from five years to six years and provided a pro-rated portion of category two funding for all applicants for funding year 2020, the sixth and final year of the test period. The FCC then directed the Bureau to release the updated category two budget multipliers and funding floor, adjusted for i
