Why I'm coming out against the Tribune Media-Sinclair merger

Coverage Type:

[Commentary] The proposed mega-merger of Sinclair Broadcast Group and Tribune Media would create the nation's largest television broadcast company in history, reaching over 70 percent of households nationwide. The combination threatens to do permanent damage to the American tradition of local broadcasting and will take a wrecking ball to the pillars of objectivism and diversity in local broadcasting. Ajit Pai, who was narrowly approved by the Senate to be President Trump's chairman of the FCC, has shown he will not hesitate to put the needs of industry ahead of the best interests of consumers. Americans continue to have faith in their local broadcast stations, but the Sinclair-Tribune merger undermines competition and threatens local broadcasting as a trusted and diverse voice for its viewers in Chicago, Illinois and across the country. This is not the broadcast media Americans deserve. It is my hope the FCC will not take any further actions to relax its media ownership limits without an honest public review of the state of the broadcast marketplace today.
