Hearing on the State of Competition on the Internet
By Direction of the Chairman

House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) and Committee Ranking Republican Lamar Smith (R-TX) announced the Committee will hold a hearing next week on the State of Competition on the Internet. This Judiciary Committee Task Force on Antitrust and Competition Policy hearing will be held on February 8th at 11:00 a.m. in 2141 Rayburn and will include discussion of the proposed Microsoft-Yahoo merger. Reps Conyers and Smith issued the following joint statement in advance of the hearing.

Microsoft’s bid to acquire Yahoo is certainly one of the largest technology mergers we’ve seen and presents important issues regarding the competitive landscape of the Internet. The House Judiciary Committee’s Task Force on Antitrust and Competition Policy intends to give the proposal a careful examination by holding a hearing next week. The Committee will hear from experts who will weigh in on whether this proposed consolidation works to further or undermine the fundamental principles of a competitive Internet.
