Senate Committee Seeks Domestic Eavesdropping Info

SENATE COMMITTEE SEEKS DOMESTIC EAVESDROPPING INFO

The Senate Intelligence Committee has told the Administration that it cannot complete its review of the White House-backed proposal to rewrite the rules for domestic surveillance until the committee receives the President's orders authorizing the warrantless surveillance of Americans and legal opinions on the program. The Administration is seeking broad authority to intercept international calls of Americans without a court order. On June 7, the House Judiciary Committee begins hearings on the program, and last week the House Intelligence Committee announced that it would conduct a series of hearings on the Administration's activities and its legislative proposal. CDT applauds lawmakers for exercising vigorous oversight over the surveillance programs.
