Watchdog groups that advocate on trade issues are demanding to know whether the National Surveillance Agency has spied on them. More than 30 advocacy groups asked the US Trade Representative -- the agency that handles trade negotiations -- whether the office has used the NSA to conduct surveillance.

The groups -- including the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Public Knowledge, Public Citizen and the Sunlight Foundation -- pointed to a recent New York Times article that discusses the NSA’s surveillance on behalf of other US agencies, including the US Trade Representative. “In light of this and other disclosures, we are writing to ask if the NSA, or other national security agencies, have surveilled any US organizations or individuals advocating on US trade policy,” the groups wrote.
