Public library computers get a real workout

[Commentary] Public libraries have special reason to celebrate during this year's National Library Week. Fully a third of Americans are using public library computers. Those 77 million people are saying something important: Public libraries are essential to them. Libraries are hubs of public activity and public service. Their value can't be underestimated, especially in down economic times and especially for poor families, which can tap the public library to keep themselves connected to work, community and family. Visit your library today. Check for special activities in honor of National Library Week, which runs through Saturday. And encourage your public officials to continue their financial support. Strong communities have strong libraries, and are willing to support them in recognition of the value they offer to all local residents and businesses.
