FCC Chairman Wheeler's Response to Rep. Pallone Regarding Rates for Inmate Telephone calls

On December 3, 2014, Rep Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) wrote Federal Communications Commission Chairman Tom Wheeler expressing his support for the FCC's recent efforts to achieve fair and reasonable rates for inmate telephone calls.

On January 20, Chairman Wheeler responded by thanking Rep Pallone for his support for the FCC's efforts, and described the positive results the Report and Order had on lowering interstate rates and increasing inmate calling services usage. Chairman Wheeler also referenced the October 7, 2014 Further Notice which seeks comment on permanent rate caps on all services (local, in-state long distance, and interstate long distance telephone services), writing, "Please be assured that we will take into consideration the issues and concerns presented by all stakeholders engaged in this proceeding, including inmates and their families. The goal of the Further Notice is to reform the ICS system comprehensively, while also ensuring appropriate cost recovery and transition periods for correctional facilities."
