The adoption of the Recommendation on Principles for Internet Policy Making by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member countries, Egypt, the industry and Internet technical advisory groups was an important outcome of the Obama administration's work to build global support for an open and dynamic Internet. Significantly, the principles came out of a meeting in which participating stakeholders included civil society groups, a range of Internet-based businesses and Internet technology leaders.

On January 11, the Center for Technology Innovation at Brookings will host a forum about these new principles for Internet governance designed to support economic growth and innovation. Leading the U.S. effort to establish these principles has been U.S. Ambassador to the OECD Karen Kornbluh, who will deliver a keynote address reviewing how agreement on the recommendation was reached and the core values on which it is based. Following her remarks, Lawrence E. Strickling, Assistant Secretary at the Department of Commerce, will offer the administration’s perspective on the next steps in constructing international policymaking principles that support the virtuous cycle of investment, access and innovation needed in today's economic climate. A panel of experts will then examine how the OECD principles fit into broader international efforts, moderated by Danny Weitzner, White House Deputy Chief Technology Officer.
