47% Want Fed-Mandated Media Balance

Nearly one-half of Americans -- 47% -- believe the federal government should mandate equal time for conservative and liberal political commentary on radio and TV stations. However, a majority would exempt the Internet from any enforced balance.

Following a speech to bloggers at the conservative Heritage Foundation, in which he discussed Internet policy and the Federal Communications Commission's recent ruling against Comcast, Commissioner Robert McDowell warned that an effort to reimpose the defunct Fairness Doctrine could sync up with efforts to regulate network management, resulting in "government dictating content policy" on the Web.

Adelstein: DTV Transition a ‘Win-Win’ for Promotion

Federal Communications Commission member Jonathan Adelstein called the coming digital television transition a "win-win" proposition for broadcasters looking to market themselves and reconnect with their local communities. He urged TV broadcasters to approach the February 2009 switch to digital broadcasting as an opportunity to distinguish themselves through their efforts to inform viewers about the change.
