Former Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales mishandled highly classified information relating to the National Security Agency's wiretapping program and the administration's prisoner interrogation program, an internal report concluded Tuesday.

Sens Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Arlen Specter (D-PA), the top-ranking members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Monday that they were troubled by the FBI's collection of the phone records of four reporters at The New York Times and The Washington Post and that the episode showed a "pressing need" for legislation pending in the Senate that would provide greater legal protection for journalists.
