House Panel Discusses Preserving Internet Freedom

The House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and Internet held a hearing on the Internet Freedom Preservation Act of 2008 (HR 5353). Much of the discussion focused on Network Neutrality.

House Hearing Set on Internet Freedom Preservation Act

On Tuesday, the House Telecommunications & Internet Subcommittee will hold a hearing on the Internet Freedom Preservation Act (HR 5353), which could put some more teeth in the Federal Communications Commission's guidelines on network nondiscrimination, the issue that prompted the Network Neutrality and, more recently, network-management debates.

Community Broadband Bill Approved by Senate Commerce Committee

The Senate Commerce Committee approved legislation to increase access to broadband services for cities and towns across America. The bill, the Community Broadband Act of 2007 (S.1853), would allow municipalities to help fill the void in broadband access and enhance public safety development while bringing broadband services to their residents.

Broadband Bills on Congressional Agenda

The House Commerce Committee is scheduled to markup the Broadband Census of America Act of 2007 (HR 3919) today (see http://energycommerce.house.gov/membios/schedule.shtml). The Community Broadband Act of 2007 (S. 1853), a bill aimed at removing barriers that prevent cities and towns from offering broadband services to their residents, is scheduled for a Senate markup on October 30.
