As the shift toward 5G wireless connectivity continues, we're getting closer to the end of 3G. In 2002, Verizon was the first to launch a 3G network in the U.S., during a time when the BlackBerry was the top smartphone to own and we were five years away from the arrival of the iPhone.

Verizon to acquire Fleetmatics for $2.4 billion

It appears Verizon wasn't done making acquisitions. One week after snagging the core assets of ailing tech giant Yahoo for $4.8 billion, Verizon announced it will acquire fleet management solutions company Fleetmatics for about $2.4 billion. The Dublin-based Fleetmatics boasts technology to allow small- and medium-sized companies to manage mobile workforces. The company employs 1,200 workers, and serves 37,000 customers as of March of 2016. "Fleetmatics is a market leader in North America -- and increasingly internationally," said Andrés Irlando, CEO of Verizon Telematics. The deal is expected to close during the fourth quarter of 2016.

China clears Microsoft acquisition of Nokia

Nokia's sale of its devices unit to Microsoft cleared another major hurdle, receiving regulatory approval from China.

The Finnish smartphone maker announced China cleared a deal. The deal is expected to close by the end of the month. Microsoft's $7.2 billion deal to acquire Nokia's devices division had been scheduled to close in March, but was pushed back by a month to secure additional approvals in Asia.
