Broadband for Everyone, Everywhere

To harness broadband's power and potential, what's needed is a new commitment to making this critical medium as universal as telephones are today. What's needed is a fundamental shift in the federal, universal service policy from supporting analog, narrowband, telephone communications to supporting digital broadband communications.

Broadband and Privacy Hearing recap

On Thursday, the Senate Commerce Committee held a hearing to examine broadband provider practices with respect to consumer privacy. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Ranking Member on the Committee, called for increased transparency and disclosure for online advertising.

The Civil Rights Imperative

On September 18, Charles Benton was invited to speak at the annual conference of the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors. Benton was asked to appear on a panel titled "The Future of Communications: What is Coming in a New Administration and Beyond?" In these uncertain times, however, maybe it is too much for anyone or any one panel, to predict what our telecommunications future will look like.

McCain-Palin Love-Hate Media

The McCain-Palin campaign seems to be at war with the media. On Monday, John McCain's senior adviser Steve Schmidt slammed the New York Times as nothing more than a partisan rag. On Tuesday the campaign was trying to restrict media access to Gov Palin.

CORRECTION: FCC Agenda includes FOIA Request/Spectrum Auction

On Friday we reported that the FCC's Sept open meeting agenda does not include 1) a new auction of "D-Block/700 MHz" spectrum or 2) a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) Request by Mary O'Grady. Those items are on the agenda.

DTV Transition Oversight Hearing

The House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet held a hearing Tuesday on the status of the digital television (DTV) transition which will take place in February 2009. Rep Ed Markey (D-MA) chaired the hearing will the goals of 1) extracting lessons from this month's field test of the transition in Wilmington, North Carolina; 2) assessing ongoing governmental efforts toward a successful transition, 3) examining consumer education initiatives and ways to improve them; and 4) exploring any other policy issues affecting the future of digital television.
