Mediarights.org seeks to provide activists and social change makers with the tools and information they need to harness the power of media to further their cause. The site focuses on how nonprofits and activists can utilize documentary films to aid in their work.
This year they co-presented the Media Matters Online Film Festival with Human Rights Watch International featuring 12 short films on social issues of importance in the United States. The festival area of the site includes presentations of the films in four categories including documentary, narrative, public service announcements, and youth media. Film sidebars give relevant statistics and actions viewers can take to aid the causes portrayed in the films.
MediaRights.org's Databases:
The site contains three databases of information. The first and most comprehensive is their database of documentary films. To submit a film for review visit (www.mediarights.org/contact/films.php). Films are searchable by category, including health, human rights and the environment. Users can rate the films as well as write a review or editorial of the film and its topic.
MediaRights.org is also in the process of creating a database of activists and social change organizations as well as database of media makers who provide media services. Right now it is possible to view the activists and organizational listings by using the quick search of the site. An advanced search option will be available soon. Once fully launched, these databases promise to be powerful aids for activists and media makers.
