| From 1996-2000, Open Studio: The
Arts Online funded organizations to train the arts
community to use the World Wide Web for gathering resources,
sharing information, and building new audiences. Open
Studio's nationwide network of technology training sites
provided free access and training to artists and nonprofit
arts organizations.
Information technologies offer artists and arts
organizations powerful new opportunities to network with one
another, strengthen ties to the communities they serve, and
build new audiences. Through access and training efforts,
Open Studio ensures that the online world thrives as a
source of creative excellence and diversity. As one program
participant put it, Open Studio empowers the arts
community to "give the Internet a soul."
Our Partners The National Endowment for the
Arts is the federal grantmaking agency created by Congress
in 1965 to serve the public good by nurturing creativity,
supporting community spirit, and fostering appreciation of the
excellence and diversity of our nation's artistic
accomplishments.
Long an advocate for the development of "public space" in
the digital age, the Benton
Foundation has become a respected voice on communications
practices in the public interest. Published research includes
reports on networking classrooms, libraries, and low-income
communities, and effective uses of telecommunications by
nonprofits.
