The 19 largest U.S. cable and telephone providers -- representing about 94% of the market -- acquired more than 8.5 million high-speed Internet subscribers in 2007, according to findings from Leichtman Research Group. Annual broadband additions were down compared to the record 10.4 million in 2006, and 9.9 million in 2005, and marked the fewest since 2003, according to Leichtman Research. The top broadband providers now account for over 61.9 million subscribers, with cable companies counting 33.5 million broadband subscribers, and telcos tallying 28.4 million subscribers.
