News outlets are fact-checking political advertising more than ever, according to studies released by the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania. Among the findings: 1) A study of stories published in 34 of the largest U.S. newspapers showed the number of “adwatch” type stories published in the 2005/2006 election cycle was more than 3-1/2 times higher than the number in the 1999/2000 election cycle. 2) A second survey of all U.S. televisions stations with original news programming revealed 38.8% of respondents ran “adwatch” or “fact-check” stories in the 2006 election cycle, with 45.6% planning to run such stories during the 2008 campaign.
