Two DC Companies Go Head to Head to Develop Pay Satellite Radio

Ten years ago, two DC companies were vying to provide digital audio radio service or pay-for-play radio. Paying for radio may seem weird, but then again, the entrepreneurs pointed out, when cable first started, paying for TV seemed odd. Radio Inc. and American Mobile Radio Corp. hoped to have "satellites that will be able to beam 30 to 50 channels of interference-free, compact-disc quality audio to receiving antennas no bigger than a silver dollar." Most of the programming, they promised, would be commercial free.
