Bell Atlantic, NYNEX, and Pacific Telesis invested half of a billion dollars over two years into an interactive TV unit called Tele-TV. The venture was plagued with technical problems, increasing costs, and unanticipated market changes -- primarily that the Internet took off much more than fiber-optic TV systems -- and so these three Baby Bells shut the unit down. They found entering the long distance market much more appealing than promoting interactive TV.
