Competition aids consumers
[Commentary] Throughout the history of wireless in America — and especially in the last year — consumers have reaped the benefits of an intensely competitive and innovative marketplace. Wireless competition has brought an avalanche of new services and consumer friendly policies. Wireless consumers can enjoy GPS, MP3s, WiFi, high-speed video, 30-day no-cost trial periods, increased handset options and pro-rated early termination fees. A competitive industry responding to consumer demand always delivers better results than government mandates, and wireless consumers should be concerned about state-by-state regulation of early termination fees. Wireless providers will keep listening to their customers and change their products and policies when consumers demand it. But the threat of inconsistent state rules — whether brought about by regulations or by trial attorneys — is real, and the FCC can help consumers by preventing it.
